Masonry work on Diamond Bar's hills and slopes

A lot of our Diamond Bar work is on hillside lots, where the house sits on a pad cut into the slope, block walls hold up the yard behind it and the driveway climbs to the garage. We're based in Chino, and these jobs have more in common with Chino Hills than with the flat tract lots we see in Eastvale. The price usually turns on how far we carry block and stone up a grade, how deep the footings go and how much dirt comes out, and the schedule turns on whether the city's Building and Safety Division has to sign off first. I come out, look it over with you and write the estimate, and that's where you get your own number.

On a slope, the ground makes a lot of the decisions. Water runs downhill to the back of every wall, so when one cracks or leans here, I look at the drainage and the footing before I touch the mortar.

  • We take care of permits

When a job needs a permit, we apply for it with the city and plan the work around its inspections, and when it isn't clear, we check with the city before starting.

  • I write the estimate myself

I look at your job and write the estimate myself, and our own crew does the work while I check on it, so whoever priced it is watching it get built.

  • Licensed, insured and here since 2017

We've done this work out of Chino since 2017, we're licensed and insured, and every job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee, so you know who stands behind the work.

Masonry repairs and builds we do in Diamond Bar

Foundation repair

A cracked stem wall or a settled footing on a sloped lot usually traces back to water or soil, so we find the cause before rebuilding.

Chimney repair

When a chimney crown cracks or bricks loosen at the roofline, we look over the whole stack from the top down so the repair fixes why water's getting in.

Tuckpointing

We grind out worn, sandy mortar joints and refill them with fresh mortar, which keeps water out of the wall and makes old brickwork look sharp again.

Brick repair

Cracked, flaking or loose bricks get cut out and replaced with the closest match we can find, and we look at why they failed so the new ones last.

Driveway pavers

On a sloped driveway, pavers stay put when the base under them is dug deep and packed hard, so that's where most of the work goes.

Retaining wall construction

On hillside yards we build walls with footings and drainage behind them, because water trapped behind a wall is what usually pushes it over.

Masonry restoration

Older brick and stone usually needs careful cleaning, fresh mortar and a few replaced pieces, and we'd rather save original masonry than tear out work with life left in it.

Fireplace installation

We build brick and stone fireplaces for the living room or the patio, with the firebox laid out first and the face finished to suit your house.

Stone veneer installation

Thin stone on a wall or column lasts when water can drain out behind it, so we set the backing and a drainage strip before the first stone goes on.

Concrete block walls

Property line and garden walls get a footing sized for their height, steel in the cells and grout where it's needed, so the wall stands straight and stays that way.

Foundation block wall installation

For additions, stem walls and crawlspace walls, we lay block on a level footing and fill it with grout and steel, since everything above depends on that first row.

Outdoor kitchen masonry

We build the block frame and brick or stone facing for a backyard kitchen or barbecue, with openings planned for the grill and gas and power lines other trades run.

Walkway construction

We lay brick, stone or concrete paths to the door or along a sloped side yard, with steps where the grade calls for them and a firm, packed base underneath.

Brick wall installation

We lay garden walls, planters and columns in brick on a proper footing, with joints finished to match your house so the new wall looks like it belongs.

Stone masonry

We fit natural stone walls, steps and borders by hand so each piece bears on the ones below, which is what keeps a stone wall standing on uneven ground.

Brick pointing

When a few joints are cracked or crumbling, we rake them out and repack them with mortar matching the old in color and strength so the patch blends in.

  • Tell us what you're seeing

A line about the crack, the lean or the wall you want built helps me come prepared, and so does knowing whether it sits on a slope or along a property line.

  • Expect a few questions first

On site I'll ask when it started, where the water goes and what's been done to it before, because those answers usually point straight at the cause.

  • Call if that's easier

You can call (909) 479-6261 from 6 AM to 9 PM on weekdays and 7 AM to 9 PM on weekends, so there's time before work or after dinner.

Diamond Bar walls, permits and inspections

Here's what Diamond Bar homeowners usually want to know about walls, permits and city rules before any masonry work gets started.

Do I need a permit to build a block wall or fence in Diamond Bar?

The city's Planning FAQ says a freestanding wall or fence needs no building permit but does need a Zoning Clearance, an over-the-counter approval from the Planning Division. Privacy walls top out at 42 inches in setbacks facing the street and six feet in side and rear yards. If the wall sits on the line, only a licensed surveyor can confirm where that line is.

Does a retaining wall need a permit in Diamond Bar?

The city says most retaining walls three feet or shorter, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, don't need a building permit. Because the buried footing counts, a wall showing two and a half feet can still go over. Past that, we check with the city and apply for the permit when one's needed.

Does a contractor from outside Diamond Bar need a city business license?

Yes, the city requires a business license from anyone doing work inside city limits, contractors included, whether or not they have an office there. It's applied for and renewed online, and the same division answers business license questions at 909-839-7030. We're based in Chino, so it's a fair question to ask us or anyone else from outside the city.

How do I schedule a building inspection in Diamond Bar?

Call the city's inspection hotline at 909-839-7027 at least the day before you want the inspection, and leave the project address, permit number and type of inspection. Inspections run Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except holidays. On jobs where we apply for the permit, we plan the work around those inspection days.

Cities where we do masonry work

These cities have their own page on our site, but they aren't the only ones we work in. If you're nearby and don't see yours, give us a call and ask.
